A brown tail twitches beneath
steel rail ties before the body
no bigger than a crust of bread
darts in and under and around
the rail as the long pale beam
of the beast bears down and
white bread appears like a pack
the creature raises in its mouth
as the tall forms shrink and
the shuddering beast slows.
