Everyone knows the crust
that can cover waking eyes.
So I shucked off some kind
of casing that fell in a clatter.

My shoulders were stiff as if
bricked in some membrane;
I felt a sensation of strength
in my spine and abdomen.

I leaned out on the sill
shoulders moving reflexively
and noticed the cars scudding
below like prehistoric bugs.

There was nothing in the sky
or land that could restrain me
and though it has always been
so it has always been so.
